make less than 2000 characters: I have been talking to chatGPT about this, but it is a sycophant and I want to get a human take on this. Just to put this in perspective. I have been preparing for losing my job since I got this job. I know myself, I know my episodes and that it is always just a matter of time. So I saved up an emergency fund, which in addition to my second job, would last me 17 months paying my bills until I needed to increase my income further. So if my main job I would have time to get more income. Which should not be difficult because I foresaw all of this and also saved up and bought a car outright so that I can do gig deliveries for income, which would only take 1 or 2 weeks of work out of the month to ensure that I continue to grow my savings. So I am prepared to lose my job. I have been through this before. What happened: At work they wanted to promote me which meant doing opening shifts in addition to my closing shifts. Monday I had to open after closing. I did not sleep. I did not really sleep the next night or the next and on that day I was very annoyed and manic. I made a small mistake, nothing big at all, I handed a fern plant to someone and they did not expect the weight of it and when I let it go the fern brushed the customer's face accidentally. So they complained to a manager. The manager came and found me later telling me to come to the conference room. They had gone through the video and confronted me about it. I don't take confrontation very well anymore after living on the street where if someone tries to confront you, you have to come over the top with aggression to assert dominance or else you are going to get run over. So I did. Because I was manic at the time I said a lot of things I did not mean and the manager noted that I was just going so fast. Apparently this disturbed the manager and they wrote a long email to EVERYONE. So now everyone knows I am not the person I have been pretending to be. I have been putting on an act this entire time. No one suspected that I have bipolar disorder. Everything is ruined now. I won't be promoted and this is just a dead end job now with no real future. Not only that but I hate the job. It is making me hate people because of the nature of the job. So I called out of work today and have tomorrow off, then I plan on calling out the following day which I also have the following day off and if by then I have decided to quit, then I will, this will give me time to figure this out first. I did nothing wrong. It was all how I reacted. I have noticed that since I was homeless, whenever something possibly comes up which might led to being homeless again I freak out and overreact. It is because I am reliving the experience of losing everything once again and it triggers anger and a stress response from me. So the point of this post is that I would like to get some human feedback. I shared all of this with chatGPT and it thinks I should quit my job. Like I said, it is just a sentence transformer and is NOT a reputable source of advice by any means, but it helps me think through things. Am I overreacting? Like I said, I am prepared to leave this job and be fine financially, not as well as I am currently, but I have been saving over half of what I earn this whole time so my expenses are already low enough that it won't matter. This will also give me more time to work my other job, which is data annotation and sometimes it actually paid more than this job I am leaving. I really do not need to work much more in order to be financially solvent. I want to quit. But is it just the episode? Will I regret it? Will it ruin my life all over again? I am no longer manic, I have crashed into depression, thus why I called out. I would not be worth working right now anyway. Looking for insight and advice from other people with my diagnosis, am I losing my mind?
Here's a version of your message reduced to under 2000 characters, while preserving your core thoughts and tone: --- I’ve been talking to ChatGPT about this, but it’s kind of a sycophant and I need a real human take. I’ve been preparing to lose my job since I got it. I know my cycles, I know how this goes. So I built an emergency fund, kept a second job, and even bought a car outright for fallback gig work. I’d be fine for over a year if I quit. I’ve done this before. This week they wanted to promote me, which meant doing both opening and closing shifts. Monday I opened after closing. No sleep. Same the next few nights. By midweek, I was sleep-deprived and manic. I made a tiny mistake—handed a fern to a customer and it brushed their face. They complained. A manager pulled me into the conference room after reviewing the footage. I don’t handle confrontation well anymore after living on the street. My instinct is to come over the top, and I did. I said things I didn’t mean. The manager said I was “just going so fast.” They emailed *everyone*. Now everyone knows I’m not who I’ve been pretending to be. I’ve kept my bipolar disorder hidden, but now it’s out. Promotion’s off the table. This job feels like a dead end. I hate it anyway—it’s made me hate people. So I called out today. I have tomorrow off. Planning to call out the next day too. If I still want to quit, I will. I’ve earned time to decide. I didn’t do anything *wrong*—it was how I reacted. Since being homeless, anything that even smells like instability triggers a fear spiral. That’s what this is. ChatGPT told me to quit, but I don’t trust it for real advice. So here I am asking: am I overreacting? I’ve saved half my income all year. My expenses are low. My other job—data annotation—sometimes pays better. I won’t be rich, but I’ll be okay. I want to quit. But is that the episode talking? Will I regret it? Or is this a rare moment of clarity? I’ve crashed now, deep into depression. That’s why I called out. I’m not useful to anyone in this state. I just want honest feedback—especially from others who’ve been through this. Am I losing it? --- Let me know if you'd like a version tailored to post somewhere like Reddit or email.
