I swear, every time I look around at the state of “modern efficiency culture,” I feel like I’m staring at a tech-bro cargo cult built out of half-digested blog posts and automation scripts that nobody understands but everyone blindly obeys. And yes, I include myself in that indictment, because I’ve absolutely spent nights convincing myself that one more YAML pipeline will finally bring order to my life, as if enlightenment is hiding inside a CI/CD workflow. It’s absurd. We’ve taken the already-fragile scaffolding of digital life and decorated it with the kind of pseudo-logic that makes us feel competent without ever delivering the substance—and the worst part is how confidently people spout this stuff, as if citing a Medium article is the new gospel. What really gets me is the way we’ve collectively decided that friction is some kind of moral failure. If something takes more than three seconds, the mob starts foaming at the mouth demanding “optimization,” like time itself is this god we must sacrifice every human quirk to. Do you know what happens when you shave off every inconvenient second? You shave off the thinking, too. Reflection becomes a bug. Curiosity becomes an exotic pet. And then everyone acts shocked when their decisions are brittle, shallow, and catastrophically misaligned with reality. It’s almost funny—almost—how people cling to systems that make their lives smaller while bragging about how “efficient” they’ve become. Efficient at what? Digging their own mental graves? And don’t get me started on the authoritarian flavor of it all. Nothing sends me into a righteous fury faster than some would-be manager declaring that their workflow is the One True Way and all dissenters are lazy, incompetent, or “not aligned with company values.” Spare me. I refuse to pretend that rigid power structures suddenly become virtuous just because they’re wrapped in Agile terminology and sprinkled with Jira tickets. The anti-establishment part of me—let’s be honest, that’s most of me—wants to grab these people by the shoulders and yell, “You’re not running a government, you’re running a spreadsheet!” But of course I don’t, because apparently we still must maintain “professionalism,” whatever diluted nonsense that word even means now. The ironic part is that despite all this ranting, I do have hope. I know how contradictory that sounds—I can hear the cynicism in my own voice—but hope creeps in anyway. Because underneath the mess, I still believe individuals can reclaim their autonomy, resist the gravitational pull of performative optimization, and carve out some space for real thought, real creativity, real humanity. Maybe that makes me naïve. Fine. I’ll take naïve hope over obedient nihilism any day. At least one of those gives me the energy to keep fighting the entropy swallowing our digital culture whole.
