This is exactly the conversation most teams are avoiding because it cuts straight through the hype. The real risk is not that AI is “too powerful,” it’s that most organizations have no verifiable chain of custody over what they’re producing. If you can’t trace how an output was generated, what data influenced it, and where human judgment was applied, then you’re not building IP, you’re generating artifacts with unclear ownership. But I’d push this one step further. Even with human-in-the-loop and lineage tracking, if your entire pipeline depends on external APIs, you’re still outsourcing the foundation of your intellectual property. You may document it, but you don’t truly control it. Data sovereignty is the missing layer here. Owning your models, your data pipelines, and your inference stack locally or within infrastructure you control is what closes the loop. Documentation proves ownership. Sovereignty enforces it. Otherwise, you’re just keeping better receipts for assets that don’t fully belong to you.
