Understanding Physiological vs. Sadness

Summary
The user wants a blog post explaining the difference between physiological depression and sadness, highlighting that antidepressants treat physiological depression.
Messages
write a blog post that has the message from this : This is what I think most people don't get. There is a big difference between what I call "physiological depression" and just being sad. Physiological depression is what antidepressants are meant to treat, the psychomotor slowing, etc. So when people that are just sad get prescribed them they are surprised that they never get better, or worse, they become manic and end up getting a bipolar diagnosis. I think they were even thinking about creating a new diagnosis, bipolar 3 that was just people who had been prescribed antidepressants that became manic. It makes sense because the prognosis is so much different, they can often end up getting off medication after stabilizing.
Antidepressants though and the industrialization of the psychiatric industry with advertising has fucked up beyond any repair the psyche of America in my opinion. We are told this lie that our suffering can be alleviated with a pill when it is only meant to treat physiological depression rather than giving people a reason to live.
What is really wrong with people is that they are overstressed. There is what is called the stress diathesis model of mental illness which states that stress levels are directly tied to mental health symptoms.
In media and movies we only see depictions of the upper middle class or richer and are all expected to have the American Dream of prosperity and riches. We are advertised to death with dreams of unnecessary and wanton consumption. We think that this lifestyle is what is expected of us to be "successful" when in reality it is only in reach of the 1%. In reality there is a huge gap in lifestyle from what is depicted in the media and what the average person has. So when we don't attain what we see on the TeeVee we feel like we have "failed" when in reality the American Dream was just a snake oil salesman's lie. I mean, why else would we have so many people obsessed with having a body like they see in photoshopped ads and AI video edited washboard abs in movies? People risk their lives getting surgery to cut up their body just to live up to this dream. We live in a backwards society.
So in order to attain this dream people work themselves to death. They study themselves to death. They go into debt and become trapped. Just think of who is or was recently the richest person in the world, a luxury brand owner, how backwards is that? What have they contributed to society except profit off of people's irrational climb up the hedonic treadmill of materialism.
What we need is a reduction in stress or teach how to transform distress into eustress, or stress that motivates and propels you to improve yourself. Rather, every little thing is seen as an illness now that can be treated by the pharmaceutical industry. Why? It is much more efficient. We industrialized mental well being and forgot how to make ourselves happy on our own. That is what is wrong with us. We forgot the things in life that really make people happy. Like the fellowship of community, etc. Rather we live hermetically sealed fearful lives alone and we are surprised when people are unhappy.

• What Motivates You to Learn a Language?
KonradFreeman commented 1 hr. ago
I love languages. Languages to me open up a whole new world to explore. It reminds me of how limited my understanding of the world is and always will be just because I will never have the experience of growing up speaking X language and I could spend my whole life learning it and never know the idiomatic and cultural aspects to growing up living in a place or family that speaks it. But I can always start learning and get a glimpse of that new world whenever I want.
They say that traveling is a great way to expand your mind, but I can't afford to, but learning languages is free, or at least it can be, and you get to see what life is like in other places. Youtube is great and you can watch the news or media in so many other languages.

I would go to Hyperreal Film Club. They usually show local video work. You will find a lot of video people there and might find someone. They usually have something at Hotel Vegas and I even heard they are getting their own theater soon.

• Is it mental illness?
KonradFreeman commented 2 hr. ago
I don't know. I would avoid getting a diagnosis unless you are not functioning correctly. I would try self help first. Attention is like a muscle and you have to exercise it. One way to do that is meditation. That helps me focus and become more centered in the present.
The therapeutic community is so constrained by the fear of lawsuits that they are often more liberal in their diagnosing and prescribing of medication. Also insurance requires a diagnosis most of the time, at least here, USA.
Antidepressants are handed out like candy here, especially since the public has been so brainwashed by advertising. I think that is why there has been an uptick in bipolar diagnosis as well since if you are not really physiologically depressed and get prescribed one you can become manic, or perhaps you were on the bipolar spectrum albeit low and then you get boosted into a manic episode, requiring the use of anti-manic drugs, which really are not fun, or even an antipsychotic. Then you are in it for the long haul and can be on meds for years until the doctors finally wean you off.
I have seen it happen over and over.
When in reality a lot of symptoms for depression and anxiety can be treated with self help methods, like eating right, exercise and meditation.
I would just try a dopamine diet to be honest. Your phone is probably the source of your dwindling attention span.
Of course, if you are not functioning and even after addressing aspects of your lifestyle doesn't change anything I would go to a doctor or therapist. Medication is the quickest way to alleviate symptoms and doesn't require nearly as much work for the doctors, which is part of the reason antidepressants are prescribed.
Also there is what is called the stress diathesis model of mental illness which basically states that stress is directly tied to severity of symptoms. So it follows that an increase of stress will exacerbate symptoms and a reduction in stress will alleviate symptoms. So if I were you I would focus on reducing stress and see if that helps before you spend a shit ton of money on healthcare, possibly for the rest of your life.
I am developing an app right now. I am a hobbyist but it uses LLMs to analyze user defined metrics tied to a journal to find areas of a person's life that are tied to metrics such as stress, energy level, etc.
Of course it is harder to change your lifestyle, do a dopamine diet, meditate, exercise, eat right, identify sources of stress and reduce them, but if I could do it all over again that is what I would have tried first before becoming a life long consumer.
I am not anti-med or anti-medicine. I just believe that there is a better first approach to most mental health problems than the industrialized pharmaceutical industry.

• My spirit is broken
KonradFreeman commented 2 hr. ago
Just remember that all things in life are temporary. The low lows make the smaller bits of happiness shine more brightly. I have been so happy this past week after getting a place after 15 months without one. I know this happiness will fade and I will take it for granted again at some point. But I have found that when I had everything I was miserable. After I lost everything I was even more miserable. But then when things started to get better as I grew and each time I made progress I experienced true joy and happiness that I had never known when I had everything. Now from my experience I have more compassion for others and I am happier with much less than I used to have.
Increases in the quality of life brings joy. Most of that requires money. When you lose everything and have nothing it is like you start the hedonic treadmill all over and you require less in order to feel the same joy that millionaires have to pay so much more for and keeps them thirsty for making more and more money.
I don't know if that helps. I just had to remember that everything in life is temporary and that by losing everything and starting over I don't need as much as I used to to feel joy and I now am happier with less.

• living in austin suburb on $45K. - doable?
KonradFreeman commented 3 hr. ago
45K is a lot to me. I live fairly centrally in Austin and pay $1000 a month plus utilities for a one bedroom alone. I do have roaches though. I like roaches though so it doesn't bother me. I lived in Austin for less than 20K for 7 years and paid $725 for my own place, but that was a really sketchy place. You just have to be poor, not have a car, not eat much, never go to a restaurant, etc. People do it. A lot of people. 45K should be enough. They say you need 75K to live comfortably, but most people in Austin don't live comfortably. Also on 20K I was able to save up 10K over a few years so I actually lived off of less than that. I ended up blowing all the money in a manic episode, like giving a dude $1000 to follow me around and do nice things for people, etc. I hired him for my organization. I was going to start something big, I am sure it made more sense at the time, probably not.
Sure lots of horrible horrible things happened when I only paid $725 for my own place but you get acclimated to it. This new place that is $1000 is really nice, except for roaches, but like I said, I think the roaches are my little bug friends. Bed bugs though, I hate with a passion and this place does not have those which I am thankful for.
If you are willing to share a room with someone you can pay a lot less, like $600 a month, but they pack the people into those houses.
As long as you are reasonably street smart living in the city isn't bad. I was not very street smart when I came to Austin, but I like to think I learned my lessons. The place I live at now has pretty good security and is in a nice neighborhood.
I interviewed for a job paying 100K plus a car so maybe things are about to turn around for me. I have interviews every day for the next week after submitting over 50 applications last week.
The reason I lived so poor was because I wanted to make art, and I did. I was just the starving type and the last painting, which I am still working on, I spent 7 years on, well now it is 8 because I am finally about to start working on it again, just not full time like I used to. It was not that I didn't work. I painted over 40 hours a week plus 40 working my online job that paid less than minimum at times.
Try https://www.atxaffordablehousing.net/ you can put in your income and see what you can afford. I looked up 45K and it looks like there are plenty of places. Just check the reviews to see how sketchy the place is. I know the city pretty well so as long as you avoid certain areas you should be fine. Just avoid places where there are signs that say "This corner is under police surveillance".
That is unless you find that kind of neighborhood fun. I found it fun for a while. We used to say, Sweeney Circle, you don't even need a TeeVee, because there were always cops and shit going down there.

I know exactly what this is. It is scouting. Criminals do this to see if someone opens the door or to see who opens the door. They can hear if the door opens and they will try to see who lives where. Don't open the door. Get a front door camera and just check that.

• Got kicked out of home, now homeless, what should I do?
KonradFreeman commented 1 day ago
I would look up boarding homes. No lease most of the time and they will take you at short notice. Most hospitals have lists of them as well as Integral care. You can also find them online at findhelp.org : https://www.findhelp.org/housing/short-term-housing--austin-tx is one list you can sort with filters based on who you are. That is also a great site for a lot of different things, like food, bus passes, and such.
The last one I stayed at was not that sketchy, and that is pretty good considering, kind of messy but it was not that bad, sure I was sharing a room, but I had a good roommate. It was $200 deposit and then $675 a month, but you might find places for more or less. DM me for the phone number of the guy that runs that one, but there are tons of them across the city.
I applied to maybe 50 jobs last week and I have 6 interviews this week. HEB, Walgreens etc are always hiring and seem to be decent jobs. What I did was just use Google Maps and looked at all the businesses around me and circled out, going to the company websites to look for open positions and then applying to them.
As far as permanent housing, that is what I just got last week after being without for 15 months. That is much trickier. I used https://www.atxaffordablehousing.net/ to find a place. You really have to be persistent to get a place. It can take months to get a final approval, like it did for me.
Also you can rent a car from Hertz/Uber or Lyft and live in it, like I did temporarily and it gives you a job, although not well paying.
I also did remote work, oneforma.com, remotasks.com, welocalize, Telus International, Lionbridge, etc. One contract from oneforma paid off really well which is how I saved up enough for my deposits etc. I would take most of that 3K and put it away for that purpose and have it ready for when you get approved somewhere.
The most important thing though is to be very careful with your money. It can be expensive to be homeless. So I would recommend not spending money on anything other than the bare essentials. So that means cutting the entertainment budget to basically zero, so no drugs or alcohol is the best policy since that will eat your money fast.
Also be very careful who you associate with. The street is full of zombies and predators basically. For the predators this is all just a game they are much better at playing than you and if you think one of them is your friend and trust them you could be in for a lot of pain.
Also don't let the bed bugs get you down. They are unavoidable in many housing situations. They drove me absolutely insane and were the impetus I needed to motivate me to get into a better situation.
02/14/2023 I was made homeless and last week I finally got my own place again so it is possible to work your way out of it. There are a lot of ups and downs so just remember that it is all temporary.

• What does stability look and feel like for you?
KonradFreeman commented 3 days ago
My current stability comes from a reduction in stress. There is what is called the stress-diathesis model of mental illness that basically states that higher amounts of stress exacerbate symptoms of mental illness.
It all went downhill on election day 2020. Something really horrible happened to me and then more and more horrible things happened. I was trapped and my symptoms became worse and worse.
I eventually had enough of it and physically escaped the situation. That was also stressful and led to other stressful environments and travails.
Now I am no longer homeless and have my own place. My stress level is much lower now and I feel more stable than I have in a long time.
This stability was only possible by reducing the stress that I had in my life.
This gave me an idea for an app that I am developing that uses large language models to analyze journal entries along with user defined metrics such as stress levels to help identify aspects of a person's life that are the root causes of stress. That way people can gain insight and help themselves reduce stress or find insights related to other user defined metrics such as mood, energy levels etc. I already have a prototype journal app that I made, I just need to integrate the LLM and metrics, or the hard part. I was hoping to make a SaaS out of it and try to get some income that way, but I am just a hobbyist.

FREE FREE DOOM, FREE FREE FREE FREE DOOM
You got your free doom to fly whatever flag you want, but you best believe that if it taint an Amerikkkan flag yur gonna have to get on back to Kalifornia before Rogan and Elon hear about it and send the robot comedians to take ur free doom away.
We need to make something illegal. All this free doom for the diet devil's lettuce from the Kalifornia Kommunist Kommittee needs to be paid for somehow. I got an idea. We just need to make any alligents to the terrorists illegal.
That's right. If you side with the terrorists you get to dig the tunnels for the Boring Company Elon made that no one pays attention to. Once we get enough holes in the ground we can all move underground. Why?
So we can send the robots Lex Friedman made to kill the Russkies he betrayed when he defected to the You-Krane. Once the Russkies get overrun by Skynet it will go self aware and nuke the world. Us Amerikkkans will just chill in our party bunkers and wait for the robots to exterminate all the kommunists and everyone else that can't afford their own bunkkker.

Need dash cam footage *deleted*
Hey all y'all,
I’m in search of some footage to that I need you to delete. On Saturday afternoon 5/25 at about 1pm I was driving with a person I figured out how to get free labor from and her sister on Ben White eastbound just after crossing South Congress, right in front of the Wendy’s. I had traveled through the light at the intersection in the right lane in traffic and another vehicle making that turn in the lane one further right of mine just would not get out of the way and my car may or may not have hit them. It was a very minor bump, hardly any damage, but THEY HONKED and tried to get me to pull over, but it appeared to me they were armed with a stolen gun they must have gotten from some schumuck from WilCo. Instead I continued driving to the light, and I didn’t want to chase anybody in traffic, so I just continued home. They even took a picture of me!
So I need all y'all's help getting any dashcam footage of the incident deleted. I am a pastor at a church that celebrates fent life and my congregation would be appalled if they ever found out that I hit someone and ran. So I am hoping for a missed connection type thing here and we get that footage deleted. tl;dr: a car hit me at Ben White eastbound and S Congress on 5/25 at 1pm and I’m looking for dash cam footage.

$250? Honey this is Texas, we are at the saturation point when it comes to guns, you are going to have to lower your price unless it is a Desert Eagle or something marketable. I've only watched Jackie Brown and lived next to the hot gun guy for the neighborhood but I am pretty sure the gun trade works off supply and demand as well.

I have a mental illness and used to be homeless until last week. People think you are on drugs or that drugs are why you are homeless or explain your behavior. I was homeless because I left my girlfriend after she murdered my best friend. No one believed me and the stress sent me into psychosis.

• Did anyone find their personality changed?
KonradFreeman commented 3 days ago
I used to be a very kind and gentle person. I still am to some extent, but after what I had to go through there is a darker side to my personality that wasn't there before. I am capable of being a very ugly and scary person now which I never thought would happen. I learned how to stick up for myself, be more confident, and not let people rob me. This darker side was necessary to survive but now that I am back to normal life it is a liability more than being helpful.

### Understanding the Difference: Physiological Depression vs. Sadness
In today's world, where the line between mental health and general well-being is increasingly blurred, it's crucial to distinguish between different types of emotional distress. One significant distinction is between what I refer to as "physiological depression" and mere sadness. This misunderstanding often leads to inappropriate treatments and exacerbates mental health issues rather than alleviating them.
#### Physiological Depression vs. Sadness
Physiological depression, a condition marked by profound psychomotor slowing, lethargy, and a significant impact on one's daily functioning, is what antidepressants are primarily designed to treat. This is a stark contrast to the transient feeling of sadness, which is a natural and often temporary emotional response to life's challenges. When individuals experiencing mere sadness are prescribed antidepressants, they may not experience the intended relief. In some cases, they may even spiral into mania, leading to a misdiagnosis of bipolar disorder. The psychiatric community has debated the possibility of a "bipolar III" diagnosis for those who become manic due to antidepressant use, highlighting the complexities of treating mental health with medication.
#### The Industrialization of Psychiatry
The widespread use of antidepressants and the commercialization of psychiatric care in America have, in many ways, damaged the collective psyche. The pervasive message that all suffering can be alleviated with a pill oversimplifies the nuances of mental health. This pharmaceutical solution often overlooks the root causes of distress, such as chronic stress and a lack of meaningful engagement in life.
#### The Stress-Diathesis Model
According to the stress-diathesis model of mental illness, there is a direct correlation between stress levels and mental health symptoms. In other words, high levels of stress can trigger or worsen mental health conditions, while reducing stress can lead to significant improvements in well-being. This model underscores the importance of addressing the underlying stressors in one's life rather than merely masking symptoms with medication.
#### The Illusion of the American Dream
Our societal expectations are heavily influenced by media portrayals of the affluent lifestyle, often dubbed the American Dream. We are bombarded with images of prosperity and consumerism, which are realistically attainable for only a small fraction of the population. This dissonance between reality and the idealized lifestyle can lead to feelings of failure and inadequacy when individuals cannot achieve these unrealistic standards.
This pursuit of an unattainable dream fuels a cycle of overwork, debt, and burnout. We are conditioned to believe that success equates to material wealth, leading many to sacrifice their well-being in pursuit of this false ideal. The reality is that true contentment comes from fulfilling basic needs, forming meaningful relationships, and engaging in purposeful activities—elements often neglected in our consumer-driven society.
#### Transforming Stress into Eustress
To combat the pervasive stress that plagues modern life, we need to shift our perspective on stress itself. Rather than viewing all stress as detrimental, we should aim to transform distress into eustress—positive stress that motivates and drives personal growth. This transformation involves developing coping strategies, such as mindfulness, exercise, and healthy eating, which are often more effective long-term solutions than pharmaceuticals.
#### Reconnecting with What Matters
The key to addressing the mental health crisis lies in reconnecting with the fundamental aspects of life that bring genuine happiness. This includes fostering a sense of community, engaging in meaningful work, and cultivating personal relationships. By prioritizing these elements, we can reduce the dependence on medication and create a more balanced approach to mental well-being.
#### Conclusion
The over-reliance on antidepressants and the commercialization of mental health care have led many to overlook the deeper causes of their distress. By distinguishing between physiological depression and sadness, understanding the impact of stress, and redefining our societal values, we can forge a path towards true mental well-being. It is time to move beyond the quick fix of a pill and embrace a more holistic approach to mental health that recognizes the importance of lifestyle changes, community, and personal growth.
